A Trans-Siberian Diary: Day 7

all seasons in one day
View Round the World on shoestring's travel map.

By this morning, we were ready for our Trans-Siberian adventure to come to a close.

We did get some great views of China once we'd woken up this morning though. Mile after mile of neatly planted fields gave way to some stunning mountain scenery before we entered the outskirts of Beijing.

Before too long we'd arrived at the huge railway station. The weather has been hot and humid - just the weather to lug heavy backpacks around in.

Beijing is fascinating. Turn a corner and the huge hotels, office blocks and multi-lane roads give way almost immediately to narrow, quiet, older streets, including the one our hotel is on.

The traffic is chaotic and no one pays any attention to the lights - when the green man appears for pedestrians to cross, cars from both directions will continue to drive past - you'd better stop because they're not going to.

We're looking forward to exploring the city tomorrow after what will hopefully be our first decent night's sleep in a week.
