The First Bump in the Road...

all seasons in one day

So, we were all set to go to Switzerland next. We booked a hostel in Bern; we just needed to get there. We had our Interrail passes, so no problem! However, when we looked online to reserve a seat for a train from Paris to Bern, nothing came up. There were trains running, as a simple check of the timetable confirmed, so we headed to the Gare de l'Est and asked a ticket seller there. Apparently while there were seats available, the number allocated to Intterail pass-holders had been filled, and he couldn't find anything, on any route out of Paris... nothing.

So we spent a couple of hours in an internet cafe, and worked out that in theory we should be able to make it to Bern via a very indirect route that involved using only regional trains, changing three times, and spending most of the day travelling. We just needed to check that this would work in practice, so we returned to the station and found a helpful woman who told us that, yes, it should work, though she did look at us as if we were a little crazy.

So we should be spending tonight in Bern, though we don't get in until around 11.30pm. It's going to be a long day...
