June Gloom

Unfortunately the bright sunshine of our first day here was misleading, and has given way to what is apparently known as June Gloom. The weather has been overcast and cool, and the sea is very cold - though some brave people are swimming and surfing anyway, while we walk around in our microfleeces.

The weather reflects our mood. Despite now sharing a common language, we somehow feel more foreign in Los Angeles than anywhere else we've been, and the culture shock has taken us by surprise. Perhaps coming from Japan - very ordered, very self-contained - has made LA seem even more different.

Still, we're not going to judge the whole country by our first few days here, and are looking forward to seeing everything the US and Canada have to offer. Our route is still uncertain, but we've begun to think about how we might make our way to New York over the next two months.

Oh dear - looks like almost any south-east England seaside resort on most days of the year! Your observation about the culture shock you experienced is interesting; as Churchill said, 'two nations divided by a common language'. You may not have noticed it so much if you'd flown straight there from the UK but you've had a taste of how other societies are ordered and it must make the differences seem more accute. However, LA is not the US thankfully...........

Oh no - sorry there's no sun. Seems v similar to the weather here - sunny spells with lots of rain showers too. At least it gets u a bit acclimatised to life back home. Hope you are making the most of the shops - how's 3rd Street in Santa Monica?! xxx
